Shingle Showdown: 3-Tab vs. Architectural

Shingles are an essential part of your roof that keeps your home protected from the elements. While there are many available materials, most shingles today are made from asphalt. Over time, different styles of asphalt shingles have been developed. The professionals at A.O. Roofing Services have the knowledge and experience to help you determine what type of shingle is best for your home. Let’s take a closer look at the two main types of asphalt shingles we use what sets them apart.

Different Types of Asphalt Shingles

There are two main types of asphalt shingle: Three-tab shingles and architectural shingles.

Three-Tab Shingles

Three-tab shingles are shingles that lay flat and have three tabs on each shingle strip, hence the name. These older, more basic style of asphalt shingle are sometimes referred to as strip shingles. They’re made with a single layer of asphalt, and have a very flat appearance.

Three-tab shingles were once the main type of roofing shingles used in the U.S., and they are still in use today, though they are not as popular as they once were. They’re often chosen because they’re more affordable and lighter weight than other types of shingles. While they’re more affordable, three-tab shingles are thinner and less durable than other types of shingles, so they require replacement sooner.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles, also called dimensional shingles, are a newer, more durable style of shingle. They provide a dimensional look to your roof and can simulate the appearance of old wood-shake and slate roofs. They’re made with two or more layers of asphalt fused together, making them heavier and more durable. Architectural shingles also come in a wider range of colors, providing more options for homeowners who want a great looking roof.

While they’re more expensive than 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles are still relatively affordable, especially relative to their durability and lifespan. Plus, because of that added durability, architectural shingles are typically backed by a longer warranty and you won’t have to replace your roof as soon, leading to long-term savings.
