The previous roof was an architectural shingle roof, and we replaced it with the same type of architectural shingles, which are heavier and more substantial than three-tab shingles. We love Atlas brand shingles, and we used those in Black Shadow for this replacement. In addition, we also used Atlas WeatherMaster Ice & Water Underlayment for this project. This provides a secondary waterproofing barrier to protect the roof from ice and water damage. This type of underlayment is also beneficial because:
- The asphalt coating seals around nails to make it more watertight.
- It has a fiberglass mat that is stronger, meaning it’s less likely to tear than saturated felt.
- They have a UV-protected surface and high-temperature stability.
