Putting Halloween Decorations on the Roof? Here’s How to Do it Safely

It’s officially spooky season, and there’s no better way to get into the Halloween spirit than putting up some decorations. But if you’re putting decorations on the roof, it’s important to do so without damaging the roof or hurting yourself. In this article, the A.O. Roofing team will take a deep dive on how to safely decorate your roof.

How to Decorate Your Roof Safely

Any roofer will tell you: when you’re on a roof, safety comes first. To avoid falls and other hazards, you should:

  • Alway step carefully. If you see missing shingles or discoloration, avoid stepping on this section of roof: it could be a weakened section of roof.
  • Work with a partner. With two people, you can have somebody to watch your back, hold ladders and tools, and help in case something does go wrong
  • Test beforehand. If you’re putting up lights or other electronic decorations, be sure to test them before you get on the roof.

Halloween Decorations That Won’t Damage Your Roof

Besides your own safety, you should consider the safety of your roof as well. Even the world’s best decorations aren’t worth costly damage to your roof. To keep your roof in good condition while decorating:

  • Use roof friendly decorations. String lights, inflatables, banners, and other lightweight, easy to install decorations are ideal for giving a spooky touch without straining your roof.
  • Inspect your roof beforehand. If anything or anyone is going to be on your roof, an inspection is essential to identify and address problem areas and other hazards.
  • Make sure decorations are properly secured. Use methods such as clips or hooks that don’t penetrate your roof, and ensure they’re firmly secured.

There’s Nothing Scary About Roof Safety

This spooky season, make sure your decorations are the scariest part of Halloween, not costly roof damage or potentially serious injuries. Follow roof safety procedures, and use the right decorations and methods to secure them. Still have more questions about your roof? Contact the pros at A.O.
