When it comes to roofing work in Florida, few things matter more than hiring the right professional. Your roof protects your home or business, and you deserve a contractor who is qualified, insured, and recognized for their expertise. At A.O. Roofing Services, we always encourage homeowners to understand the credentials that protect them (and their investment) before signing a contract. Here’s what a reputable Florida roofer should carry in terms of licenses, insurance, and certifications:

State Licensing Through the DBPR

In Florida, roofers must be licensed through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) to legally perform most roofing work statewide. There are two types of contractor licenses relevant to roofers:

  • Certified Roofing Contractor License — Allows roofing work anywhere in Florida.
  • Registered Roofing Contractor License — A local designation limited to specific counties or cities.

Most homeowners want roofers with the certified license, because it means the contractor has met statewide standards and passed the required exams. To qualify for this license, roofing contractors must demonstrate a combination of experience and education totaling at least four years, including supervisory construction experience. College credits or related military service may substitute for part of the experience requirement, but at least one year must be on the job.

Roofers must also pass two state exams before licensure can begin. The Business and Finance exam covers financial management and administrative responsibilities, and the Trade Knowledge exam, focuses on technical roofing skills and building code requirements.

Insurance: Protection for You and The Company

A licensed roofer isn’t fully qualified unless they also carry proper insurance. In Florida, proof of coverage is required before a contractor’s license can be activated.

General Liability Insurance protects your home if something goes wrong during the project, such as property damage or third-party injuries.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance is required if the company has employees. It covers medical expenses and lost wages if someone is injured on the job.

Without these policies, homeowners can be held financially responsible for accidents or injuries that occur during roofing work. That’s why a valid Certificate of Insurance naming the contractor and the DBPR should always be provided before work begins.

Certifications: A Mark of Expertise

While not required by Florida law, industry and manufacturer certifications are valuable indicators of a roofer’s training and commitment to quality. Examples include:

  • Manufacturer Certifications show specialized training with specific roofing products.
  • Industry Certifications (from organizations like the National Roofing Contractors Association) demonstrate ongoing education and adherence to best practices.

These credentials don’t replace a state license, but they do give homeowners confidence that the roofer is trained and up to date on installation standards.

At A.O. Roofing Services, we carry all necessary state licenses and insurance, and we pursue relevant certifications to give our customers confidence from the first call to the final inspection.
