Whenever our A.O. Roofing team gets asked what the difference between vents and fans, the short answer is that vents and fans move hot and moist air out of your attic. Each does it in different ways, at various speeds, and with varying effects on your roof system. Below, we’ve broken down each component to give you a general idea of what’s installed on your roof.

Ridge Vents

Ridge vents have a low profile and are installed along the peak of the roof. They rely on natural convection, where hot air rises and exits at the ridge, combined with continuous soffit intake to maintain a steady, passive airflow. These work best for most shingle and metal roofs.

  • Pros: Even ventilation across the entire attic, no electricity, clean look, great for preventing hot spots and moisture pockets.
  • Cons: Performance drops if soffit intake is blocked; poor installs (no baffles, wrong nails, short ridge coverage) reduce effectiveness.

Box Vents (Static Vents)

Box vents are individual, louvered “mushroom” vents placed near the ridge. They have passive release points allowing air to escape where each vent is installed. These are best used for complex rooflines where a continuous ridge isn’t practical.

  • Pros: Flexible placement, no power required, easy to add to problem areas.
  • Cons: Vent “coverage” is spotty, missed zones can trap heat; aesthetics are more visible; need careful count and layout to match attic volume.

Attic Fans (Powered or Solar)

Attic fans are installed on the roof or gable to exhaust air continually. Motorized units pull air from intake points, while solar-powered versions operate when the sun is shining. They are helpful in attics with poor natural airflow or limited ridge length, as well as in garages and bonus rooms with high heat loads.

  • Pros: Strong airflow boost; can “rescue” under-ventilated attics.
  • Cons: If intake is inadequate, fans can pull conditioned air from the house, raising energy bills; require power (or sun) and proper controls; more penetrations to flash.
