What Is an R-Value?
Before we talk about the materials themselves, we need to talk about “R values,” a measurement of how well a material is able to insulate. Simply put, the higher the R value, the better the insulation.
Comparing Different Roof Insulation Materials
1. Fiberglass
Fiberglass insulation is one of the most familiar forms of insulation for residential homes; it’s the (usually) pink, fluffy stuff that can make you horribly itchy if touched. It provides an R value of 2.9 to 3.8 per inch, and boasts affordability, fire resistance, moisture resistance, and ease of recycling.
2. Spray Foam
Another familiar form of insulation is spray foam, which as it sounds, is foam which is sprayed into spaces to be insulated and then rapidly expands. Spray foam generally provides R values of 3.6 to 3.9 per inch, and it’s an excellent choice for oddly shaped spaces or hard to reach areas.
3. Loose Fill
Made from materials like fiberglass, cellulose, and mineral wool, loose fill is blown into gaps and spaces in walls and attics to provide insulation. It provides R values of around 3.2 to 4 per inch, and is ideal for hard to reach spaces. It’s also highly adaptable to different climates, including Central Florida’s.
