When replacing a roof, it’s critical to choose the right materials for the Florida climate. The original roof used modified bitumen, an older roofing system that’s used for flat roofs. This is a decent roofing material, but it has some significant drawbacks, such as a shorter lifespan than other materials and significant heat absorption. This latter can be especially concerning here in subtropical Florida, as it can make the building hot and lead to increased cooling costs.
Instead, we used thermoplastic polyolefin, or TPO, for the new roof. This is one of the most popular roofing materials, particularly for flat roofs. Unlike modified bitumen, it is highly resistant to UV rays and heat, so it won’t make buildings hotter, saving money on cooling costs in the long term. Plus, it has a longer lifespan and a surface that repels moisture and rain.
We completed this roof replacement in only two weeks so Warner students could get back to their physical activities without much of a delay.
